Exam Structure & Format

The Journeyman Electrician exam is the licensing test that lets you work unsupervised on electrical installations. The exact format varies by state and jurisdiction, but the typical structure is: • **Open-book** on the current National Electrical Code (NEC) — usually the edition adopted by your state • **80–100 multiple-choice questions** with 3–4 hours total time • **Around 70–75% pass mark** depending on the jurisdiction • Roughly **70% code-lookup questions**, **20% calculations**, and **10% theory** • Calculators allowed (non-programmable); scratch paper provided It looks generous because it's open-book — and then candidates burn three minutes per question hunting through the NEC and run out of time. The winners are the ones who know the code book layout cold before they sit down.

NEC Code Lookups

Most of the test is "can you find the answer in the NEC fast?" The same articles come up over and over. Tab and drill these until lookups become instinct: • **Article 110** — General requirements (working space, identification, terminations) • **Article 210** — Branch circuits (rating, GFCI, AFCI, receptacle requirements) • **Article 215** — Feeders • **Article 220** — Load calculations (dwelling, commercial, optional methods) • **Article 230** — Services • **Article 240** — Overcurrent protection • **Article 250** — Grounding and bonding (almost guaranteed multiple questions) • **Article 300** — Wiring methods (box fill, raceway support, derating) • **Articles 310** — Conductors (ampacity tables 310.16 etc., adjustment factors) • **Article 430** — Motors (table lookups 430.250, FLA, conductor sizing) • **Chapter 9 tables** — Conduit fill, conductor properties, voltage drop If you can find the right table in under 20 seconds, you're going to pass. If you can't, you won't.

Motor & Conductor Calculations

Calculation questions are where the time pressure bites hardest. The four families that dominate: • **Motor calculations** — FLA from Table 430.250, branch-circuit conductor sizing at 125%, OCPD sizing at 250% (or per Table 430.52), overload sizing • **Conductor ampacity** — Table 310.16, temperature correction (Table 310.15(B)(1)), adjustment for more than 3 current-carrying conductors (Table 310.15(C)(1)) • **Box fill** — 314.16 volume counting (conductors, devices, clamps, fittings) • **Voltage drop** — Chapter 9 Table 8, single-phase vs three-phase formulas, 3% branch / 5% total guideline • **Service & feeder load calcs** — Article 220 standard vs optional methods for dwellings These are pattern-recognition once you've done 50 of each. Don't memorise the answers — memorise the lookup path.

Grounding & Bonding (Article 250)

Article 250 is the single highest-yield article on the exam and the one most candidates fumble. Make sure you can navigate: • **Grounding electrode conductor** sizing from Table 250.66 (based on largest ungrounded service conductor) • **Equipment grounding conductor** sizing from Table 250.122 (based on OCPD) • **Main bonding jumper** sizing (same rules as the GEC for service equipment) • Difference between **grounded conductor**, **grounding conductor**, and **bonding jumper** — terminology gets tested directly • **Separately derived systems** (generators, transformers) and where the system bonding jumper goes • **Permitted grounding electrodes** under 250.52 If you only have one weekend to study, spend it on Article 250.

Study Strategy That Actually Works

The candidates who pass first time don't read the NEC cover to cover — that's a waste of weeks. Here's what they do instead: • **Tab your code book** with sticky tabs on every article and major table listed above. Do this in week one. • **Time every question** in practice. If a question takes more than 3 minutes, you guess, mark it, and move on. • **Drill calculations daily** — 10 motor / 10 conductor / 10 box-fill questions a day for 4 weeks beats reading the code for 8 hours on a Saturday. • **Take a full-length timed mock exam every weekend** in the final month. Pacing is the skill you're really training. • **Track your weak articles** — if you keep missing voltage drop, that's where the next hour of study goes, not Article 90.
